Overview to Liechtenstein: Travel Guide and Tourist Information

Liechtenstein

Backpackers who do make it to tiny, land-locked Liechtenstein almost inevitably just take a quick snap, send a postcard and then nip back into Switzerland or Austria. And so those who do give it a go find they’ve practically got the place to themselves.

The capital of Vaduz, with its 5,000 or so inhabitants, is more quiet town than bustling metropolis. Its sightseeing highlight is undoubtedly Vaduz Castle; a 12th century fortress that sits proudly looking down on the city and is still the home of the Prince of Liechtenstein.

Lower Liechtenstein is also home to the adjoining town of Schaan and the village of Triesenberg. With some great views of the capital and an interesting little museum focusing on Walser culture (the Heimatsmuseum), it’s well worth the short journey from Vaduz.

Upper Liechtenstein is very much like its neighbors when it comes to alpine beauty. To the southeast of the country, the good snow, runs and (crucially) good prices of Malbun make Lichtenstein an enticing alternative for budget skiers during the winter.

In the summer months, these stunning mountains are also an excellent (and pleasantly deserted) destination for climbing and trekking. Snaking through the jagged peaks, its many dramatic roads are of great appeal to keen (and fit!) cyclists.

All in all, it’s a curious little place - and that’s precisely what’s so appealing about it.
