A Guide to Eating and Drinking in Riga

Traditional Snacks

Although traditional Latvian cuisine tends to revolve (rather unimaginatively) around pork and potatoes, the capital's restaurant scene is becoming increasingly diverse and international as the number of visitors continues to grow.

The city can seem surprisingly expensive when compared to its Eastern European neighbours but - on the whole - Riga is still affordable, even for budget travelers. Restaurants around the main sights (like Cathedral Square), however, are mostly tourist orientated and probably best avoided.

The New Town is packed with fun and friendly bars and restaurants that are more budget-friendly that the picturesque Old Town. Here, travelers will find a range of eateries, from fast-food chains to old-fashioned cafes, serving Baltic favorites that cater to most tastes.

As well as its good number of restaurants, the city enjoys a wide variety of drinking establishments that range from 'Irish' pubs to authentic Latvian bars. The country's most famous beer, Aldaris, is available everywhere and, with its smooth taste, it's fast making a name for itself alongside more famous brands.

For something a bit stronger, Kristaldzidrais - one of the best selling vodkas in Latvia - and Riga Black Balsam (the national liqueur) are popular with locals and travelers alike.
