Fireworks over the River
Sumida River Fireworks Festival - Japan
When: 25 July 2009
The Sumida River event is Tokyo’s largest and most spectacular fireworks display. The festivities get underway in July with around 900,000 people turning out every year (and jostling for the limited boat space that offers the most spectacular views).
However, a perfectly good view is available on the street, an experience that's added to by stall vendors selling hot sake and corn-on-the-cob. The show itself involves around 20,000 rockets being fired from two separate bases, achieving a crossover effect.
There is also a competition between two rival Tokyo fireworks companies, resulting in a remarkable contest to see which firm can create the craziest display.
Fireworks are big business in Japan and the locals have a fervent enthusiasm for all all things pyrotechnic.
