An Assortment of Snow Scultpures
Sapporo Snow Festival - Japan
When: 05 February 2010 - 11 February 2010
Sapporo is one of Japan's largest winter shows and is highly popular with both locals and travelers. Around two million people come to the event every February to see a range of snow sculptures and ice-carvings.
Odori Park, within the grounds of Satoland, hosts the sculptures and allows a great deal of space for visitors to walk around the pieces without feeling crowded. Previous sculptures have quite often defied belief, with a replica of Nagoya Castle and a prehistoric park all being carved from snow.
Smaller ice sculptures line the streets and often contain real fish within the ice. There is an ice sculpture contest that runs regularly over the event and assorted performance pieces from the 'Ice Queen'.
