Asakusa Temple
Sanja Matsuri - Japan
When: 15 May 2010 - 17 May 2010
Asakusa Shrine Sanja, held every year in May, is the largest of Tokyo’s festivals. The event is held over three days and involves considerable amounts of dancing, drinking and music.
The focal point of the weekend is the processions of many shrines, known as 'mikoshi.' Believed to bestow luck and prosperity on the city’s inhabitants, around 100 mikoshi parade through the streets in processions that attract more than two million people to the event every year.
The last day of the festival climaxes with three giant mikoshis from the Asakusa shrine paraded from 6am to well into the evening.
