Two Sumo Wrestlers in Action
May Basho - Japan
When: 10 May 2010 - 24 May 2010
Every year, the best sumo wrestlers in Japan come together six times to compete in the Grand Tournaments. Seeking to reach the summit of the sumo world, wrestlers from across the country converge on Tokyo every May for one of these Grand Tournaments, known as the May Basho.
One of the oldest and most traditional sports in Japan – and, for that matter, the world – sumo wrestling is steeped in history and a visit to a competition provides travelers with a great insight into Japanese culture.
An impressive sight to behold, it’s far from merely a competition of brute strength, as this age-old sport has developed a range of over 70 different tricks, throws and forms over the years, meaning a good deal of skill is on display alongside the phenomenal physiques.
