Buddha's Birthday - Japan

When: 08 April 2010

Join in the biggest birthday party in the world when the whole of Japan stops to celebrate the birth of Buddha. On April 8th, there are elaborate celebrations as temples and shrines throughout the country are packed with people paying their joyful respects.

Once inside the temples, worshippers offer a sweet tea leaf to a Buddha statue in order to ward off evil spirits with its magical properties. The Sensoji Temple in Tokyo is said to be one of the best places to observe the traditions and the celebrations.

Known as Hana Matsuri, or the 'flower festival,' Buddha's birthday is also marked with processions and decorative floats. The celebrations are made even more special as they coincide with the blossoming of Japan's many cherry trees, adding color and fragrance to the occasion.
