 Preparing for the Festivities

Jamaica Carnival - Jamaica

When: 01 April 2010 - 30 April 2010

In 1989, a successful musician called Byron Lee began to plan a carnival in Kingston - and it really hasn't looked back since that first parade. Jamaica Carnival has gone from strength to strength, becoming Kingston's premier event.

The carnival takes place around April every year and is a real highlight in the Caribbean calendar. In previous years, an official carnival tune was put together with the help of Byron Lee and this went on to be a highlight in the island's musical program.

As you’d expect from a fully-fledged carnival, there's a costume competition (sponsored by large companies from the island) with the  winner is written into carnival history and a float procession featuring a series of well-known Jamaican pop stars.
