Swaggeringly brash and vibrant, Jamaica sways to its own unique rhythm. Somewhere between the teeming cities, the idyllic beaches and the plantation-swathed mountains, there’s a fantastic balance to be struck.
Kingston, Jamaica’s famous (and indeed infamous) capital is split between the gritty Downtown, and the more upmarket Uptown, where most of the big name hotels and shopping stretches can be found.
Behind Kingston, the Blue Mountains instantly make their presence known. A sharp contrast to the rambunctious city, the mountains are completely tranquil and host only lush vegetation and the odd coffee plantation.
On the other side of the Mountains, Jamaica again stretches out languorously in a lazy strip of beaches. Although Ocho Rios - on the north coast - primarily caters for package tourism, it does offer a great infrastructure and the nearby Dunn’s River Waterfall.
Further west along the same coast and Montego Bay is easily found – another noisy and bustling city whose party-happy spirit runs deep. For a really heady evening, however, Negril on the western coast tends to be a favorite amongst hardcore party animals.
Back on the east close, isolated Port Antonio and Long Bay are a welcome respite from all the hedonism. Nine Miles Village would be even quieter, if it weren’t for the hordes that flock here to see Bob Marley’s Mausoleum.
The whole island, of course, has reggae at its heart, and it’s difficult, traveling around the boisterous swirl of this island, not to conclude that, somehow, either the music defines Jamaica, or Jamaica defines it. Either way, this is a country to return to again and again.
