Getting Around Florence: Transport Tips and Advice

Transport in Florence

Up until recently, visitors had to fly to Pisa or Bologna airport and then find their way back to the city but these days there are more flights to Peretola, Florence’s rapidly growing airport. However, the Pisa or Bologna option isn’t too much of a hardship – both cities are about 1½ hours away with regular trains into Florence.

Having arrived in Florence itself, it’s not difficult to get your bearings and, as the inner city is fairly small, it’s easy to get around on foot. Most of the main sights are to be found (within easy walking distance from one another) to the north of the River Arno.

If you need to travel in from further afield, ATAF buses service the city center and the No. 7 bus takes you to the Fiesole and the centrally located Duomo. Multi-rider tickets for buses are sold at most tobacco shops and news-stands and are priced depending on the length of your trip.

Those that have the funds – and the courage – can follow the locals’ example and hire a scooter for a fun way to see the city. If you fancy taking it a bit slower, a tour with one of the various Florence walking tours is also a great way of getting to know the city.

Trains to other Italian cities leave regularly from the main Santa Maria Novella station (referred to as ‘Firenze SMN’ in timetables) which is also easily accessible by a short walk to the northwest of the city center.
