Things to Do in Jerusalem

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Jerusalem? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Explore the Old City

Jerusalem’s UNESCO-protected Old City is one of the most ancient and fascinating quarters of any city in the world. Divided into their traditional Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Armenian districts, its narrow streets are packed with stunning sites and infused with a genuinely mystical feeling.

2. Feast on Falafels

The humble falafel can be eaten right across the Middle East, but rarely is it as good as in Jerusalem. And the city’s other culinary highlights – kibbehs (a sort of meat patty), shawarmas (a kebab), baba ghanoush and hummus (aubergine and chickpea dips) – are equally delicious.

3. Wade through Hezekiah's Tunnel

Hezekiah’s Tunnel is a 530 meter water tunnel, which along with Warren's Shaft and the Siloam Channel forms the ancient system of providing water to the city. It’s also, some claim, how Joab managed to gain access to the city, an event which naturally played a vital part in David’s eventual victory. You can actually recreate the event by jumping in and splashing around in the dark!

4. Check out the View from the Mount of Olives

With its unmatchable vantage point, looking out across the Old City of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives is a leading contender for the finest view in the world.

5. Make for the Market at Machaneh Yehuda

A good market is generally the lifeblood of a city, and Jerusalem’s main market, Machaneh Yehuda is no exception. It’s the perfect place to do some grocery shopping, grab a cheap bite to eat in the food stalls, or just do a spot of top class people-watching.
