Things to Do in Galway

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Galway? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Join the Best Party in Ireland

Galway is a thoroughly welcoming, friendly sort of place. Down to the south of the city, Quay Street and Shop Street are packed with great little pubs, many of which also put on some top quality Irish music.

2.Go for a Stroll along the Salthill Promenade

Out to the west of the city, the Salthill Promenade leads on to Galway’s attractive beaches. On a January day when the wind’s up, it can be a bit bracing to say the least!

3.The National University of Ireland

One of the country’s foremost seats of learning, the main campus of the National University of Ireland with its fine quadrangle is also one of the more attractive sights in Galway.

4. Get out to the Aran Islands

The Aran Islands of Inishmaan, Inishmore and Inisheer may only be about thirty miles from Galway but a gulf lies between them. A more traditional way of life, rooted in the hardship of life on the island, is still visible. In addition to picking up some of the wool products for which they’re famous, there are also several Iron Age forts to explore.

5. The Galway Arts Festival

Traditionally taking place in the last two weeks of July, the Galway Arts Festival is made up of Ireland’s most important program of theatre, dance, music, comedy and literature. This being Galway, the evenings are also given over to partying on a fairly large scale!
