Irish Dance on St. Patrick's Day
St Patrick's Day Festival - Ireland
When: 17 March 2010
Due to high levels of Irish emigration (particularly to America), St. Patrick’s Day is now a truly global event and worldwide celebrations tend to center around drinking a prodigious amount of Guinness and tucking into a tasty Irish stew.
However, the Irish roots of the day shouldn’t be overlooked in all the excitement. Given that St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, the best place to enjoy the day is always going to be Dublin!
Parades combine with extravagant eating, drinking and partying over the five days leading up to the 17th of March when St. Patrick was believed to have died. Today it’s enjoyed by around 500,000 people – with a fair few backpackers among them.
The procession route heads over the river and into the main city districts, through O' Connell Street and into Temple Bar. Unsurprisingly, many participants choose to stop off here for a pint of stout and some never quite make it back onto the route...
Although the whole affair can, naturally, be pretty riotous, it’s not just about partying: it’s also a celebration of Irish culture. One way or another, though, if you haven’t already got a raft of St. Patrick’s Day stories then it’s high time to head Dublin.
