Things to Do in India
Want to know some of the standout things to do in India? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Taj Mahal, Agra
Undeniably one of the most recognizable structures in the world, the Taj Mahal at Agra was constructed between 1632 and 1648, as a mausoleum for the wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. As the most popular tourist attraction in India, it draws two to three million visitors every year, all of whom are required to walk or take an electric bus to the complex, as polluting traffic is forbidden.
2. The Red Fort, Delhi
Also known as Lal Qil'ah, the sandstone fort was also constructed by Shah Jahan. Despite some of its pavilions being destroyed by the occupying British after the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, it remains a stunning example of Mughal architecture. It also plays a significant role in Indian culture, as the site from which the prime minister delivers a biannual address.
3. India Gate, Delhi
A 42 meter high monument to the Indian soldiers who fell in World War I and the Afghan Wars, the gate is a New Delhi landmark. It houses a black marble cenotaph, each side of which is adorned with the phrase 'Amar Jawan', meaning 'Immortal Soldier'.
4. Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand
Home to some of the most dazzling flora and fauna in India, the national park in Uttarakhand became a protected site in the 1930s, after its discovery by British mountaineer Frank Smythe. With over 500 species of flowers and stunning varieties of poppies, orchids, rhododendrons, primulas and daisies, the World Heritage Site is a tranquil haven within a bustling nation.
5. The Churches of Goa
The beach paradise of Goa also offers some amazing religious architecture left over from Portuguese colonization. Unlike the majority of their compatriots, many Goans are Christians, and the Basilica of Born Jesus is one of the most visited Christian pilgrimage sites in Asia.
