Want to know some of the standout things to do in New Delhi? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Red Fort
Situated in Shahjahanabad – the old Mughal city of Old Delhi – the Red Fort is one of the most ravishing fortified palace complexes in India. As a testament to the sheer opulence of its creators, inside, the ladies’ apartments had a water cooling system. Not bad for the 17th century…
2. Roar around in a Rickshaw
There’s only one way in to take in the pure mayhem that is traffic in Delhi, and that’s by throwing yourself into the midst of it in a rickshaw. Few forms of transport can compete with it for sheer exhilaration.
3. The Qutub Minar
At over 70 meters, the Qutub Minar is the largest brick minaret in the world. These days, you can climb up to take in the fantastic views from the top. With about 400-odd steps to climb, just make sure you don’t do it during the heat of the day!
4. Check out Chandni Chowk Bazaar
Not far from the Red Fort, the sprawling maze of stalls that makes up Chandni Chowk is at once exciting and a little intimidating. Practically anything can be bought here and its food stalls offer some of the best (and cheapest) eating options in the city.
5. Be humbled by Humayun’s Tomb
Along with the Red Fort (Delhi’s other UNESCO-protected monument), Humayun’s Tomb is truly unmissable. Built in the 16th century, this complex of mausoleums, gardens and waterways is absolutely enormous, and was a source of inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
