In addition to its sophisticated restaurants, Mumbai nightlife's is famous for being the most dynamic in India. The burgeoning bar and club scene is also more drinking-orientated than elsewhere, giving it a westernized vibe.
With a mix of live music, chic clubs and kitsch themed bars, Mumbai’s nightlife rivals that of many European cities. And whilst those in the center cater more to Bollywood’s finest than to backpackers, there is still plenty of cheap entertainment to be found.
The majority of travelers congregate around Chowpatty Beach and the Colaba Causeway. There’s also a more authentic Indian scene at Juha Beach and Bandra, which tends to be more budget-friendly than the two more touristy districts.
Although there’s a range of late-night hotspots at the big hotels, bars are often more popular in Mumbai because clubs often adopt a couples-only policy on the door. Travelers, however, shouldn’t have much difficulty getting in, especially in a mixed group.
Cinema is also something of an institution in Mumbai and many locals opt for a movie over a club on a night out. There are some 200 cinemas across the city showing mainly Bollywood films, although some (like the Regal in Colaba) also screen blockbusters.
Mumbai may not have the variety and choice of cities such as Paris or New York but, like everything else in the city, its nightlife is so deliciously hectic that wherever travelers choose to end up, they’ll be in for a surprisingly great night out.
