Hong Kong Nightlife: Places and Districts to Go Out in Hong Kong

Sparkling Hong Kong by Night

Hong Kong has a well-earned reputation as a ‘work-hard, play-hard’ sort of place. And Hong Kong nightlife is made up of literally hundreds of top bars and clubs - all waiting to be discovered and become the next big thing in this vibrant city.

While many of the bars that attract the business people and cool clans are not cheap, there are a few places just waiting for the budget traveler. These also offer a more interesting take on Hong Kong, and provide a better insight into the city than their more illustrious rivals.

The area of Lan Kwai Fong on the Island is the most popular with visitors and locals at nighttime, largely due to the close proximity of various bars and restaurants. The newly constructed and nearby area of SoHo is considered a more upmarket, and expensive option.

Both areas really come alive as the day wears on and the setting sun melts into the sea. Locals and travelers sit side by side enjoying their drinks in and around the bars, before moving on to a restaurant, or a club (the best of which are in Lan Kwai Fong).

Wan Chai area (once the Red Light District) is a popular place for travelers to enjoy a tipple in down-to-earth bars while on the Island. Sports fans, meanwhile, should definitely make for one of a couple of excellent sports bars here where you can catch the very latest events on the big screens.

Knutsford Terrace on Kowloon rarely disappoints those who make it there. Many, however, are drawn by Hong Kong’s more unusual night pastimes: karaoke bars (labeled KTV) can make for a riotous good time, while gambling at the Happy Valley raceway is always popular.

Finally, for those who like their clubbing manic, there are some impressively wild parties to be had in the Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui. Joints here are smaller than the huge venues in Hong Kong's heart; they’re also cheaper, more authentic, and totally unrestrained!
