Things to Do in Santorini Island

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Santorini? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. See a Staggering Sunset

The island’s sunsets are famous, and there are few things better than forking out for an overpriced drink (or just sitting on the beach!) and watch the sun melting into the sea.

2. Be Amazed by Akrotiri

The massive archaeological site of Akrotiri is like a less congested version of Pompeii. Buried by a volcanic eruption about 3,500 years ago, the site (an incredible indication of the sophistication of the ancient Minoan culture) was only discovered and excavated in the 1960s. Intriguingly, only a small part of it has been uncovered.

3. Bask on a Black Beach

The lava and ash spewed out of the island’s volcano have given its beaches an unusual black color. Not that it should put you off – they’re amongst the most sought-after strips of sand on the Mediterranean. A word of caution, though: being black, they can get boiling hot in the sun, so remember to take your flip-flops!

4. Get off the Beaten track

Whilst it may not be a particularly large island, Santorini is beautiful and, inland, particularly, fairly sparsely populated. Tracks lead off across the rocky outcrops that line the island, and there are a number of interesting sights to explore and stunning views to take in.

5. Bathe in a Hot Spring… In the Sea!

Beneath the caldera, a still active volcano bubbles away. At certain points you can swim in waters warmed by the geothermal activities below.
