Overview to Santorini Island: Travel Guide and Tourist Information

Stunning Santorini

The volcanic island of Santorini is the shining jewel in the crown of the Greek Islands: beautiful black sanded beaches lapped at by warm, sparkling waters nestle seductively into coves; villages perch precariously on cliffs... Everything is almost too beautiful for words.

The small but perfectly-formed capital of Fira is both the main focus of the many visitors who come to the island and the hub of the Santorini nightlife. High up, with stunning views out to sea, narrow cobbled alleyways cut erratic swathes through the jumble of houses.

Oia is another pretty little collection of houses, stacked one on top of the other, rising up from the sea. With its port and picturesque clifftop location, it attracts something of a jet-setting clientele. The resort towns of Perissa and Kamari, meanwhile, have good beaches and a more low-slung party atmosphere.

Santorini also has a number of important sights: the well-preserved Minoan site of Akrotiri is a Grecian Pompeii, consumed by ash when the island’s volcano erupted about 3,500 years ago. Ancient Thera is well worth a visit - for those prepared to scramble their way up to it, at least.

Santorini may be a busy little place, but it’s almost impossibly scenic, and its famous whitewashed towns are amongst the most beautiful (and most photographed) in the Mediterranean. This image, of the island’s charming towns, dazzlingly white against the bluest of blue skies might be familiar, but nothing can prepare you for seeing them in the flesh.
