Things to Do in Ghana

Located to the northeast of Kumasi, these buildings are the last vestige of the Asante civilization that was once so influential throughout the region.

With its location on Lake Volta (the largest manmade lake in the world, covering a staggering 45 percent of Ghana's surface) the Akosombo Dam is undeniably quite a spectacle.

Built by the Portuguese in the 15th century, this fort was subsequently taken over, first by the Dutch and then the British. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort established Elmina as a trading city by offering it a considerable defense against attack.

This sanctuary offers tours of the forest where monkey inhabitants live in (relative) harmony, alongside small village communities. Funds generated from the tours help shore up this model of sustainable tourism.

The oldest (and largest) museum in Ghana, it tracks the country's history all the way back to the Stone Age. Separate cultural, archeological and art sections contribute to a series of fascinating insights into the country.
