Getting Around Munich: Transport Tips and Advice

A Subway Station in Munich

Getting to and from Munich couldn’t be easier: the city’s handsome Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport is well served by domestic and international flights. From the airport, the S1 or S8-bahn runs to Marienplatz and the main terminal. The journey takes about 40 minutes and services run every 20 minutes from 4am to 12:30am.

There are fast and frequent rail connections to all major German cities, whilst additional networks join Munich with other European cities such as Vienna, Prague, Zurich, Rome and Paris.

Once in the city, you can buy an MVV ticket which is valid on the S- and U-bahns, trams, and buses (but be sure to validate the tickets before riding!). Short rides are quite cheap and allow you four stops on buses and trams, or two stops on the S- and U-bahns.

Although longer trips aren’t much more expensive, purchasing a Mehrfahrtenkarte (strip-card of ten tickets) can save you a little extra. Day passes for the inner zone and three-day passes also prove cost-effective deals.
