Hamburg's most famous export needs no introduction. The hamburger is enjoyed all over the world and, although its now associated with American cuisine, the story has it that a German immigrant from the city began the trend by selling them in New York back in the 1850s.
Other favorites include the unusual 'bohnen, birnen und speck' (runner beans, pears and bacon) and a variety of fish dishes such as 'finkenwerder scholle' (pan-fired plaice) that come in fresh from the busy port.
As with every big city, areas around the tourist hotspots are best avoided for their prices, but other restaurants and cafes in the city can be generally very affordable. The best spot to sample the local catch on a budget is the renowned Fischmarkt where delicacies can be picked up on the cheap for a picnic, or a self-catered meal back at your hostel.
In addition to its traditonal German fare, the city is also home to a variety of international cuisines, all of which have outlets across Hamburg. Thanks to a large Turkish community, it's the kebab that - interestingly - is the pick of budget-friendly options for its quality.
In terms of nightlife, Hamburg also rarely disappoints. St Pauli - and the Reeperbahn in particular - is the main place to head for a drink and a good dance. Famed for its seedy past, the Reeperbahn still has a lively sex trade but is now the site of many more reputable venues.
Like much of Germany, Hamburg is a beer-drinker's place at heart. Home to a variety of pleasantly lively beer halls and gardens, the city also has some atmospheric cellars that serve their own brews.
However, dozens of smart cocktail bars and hot live music venues in keeping with the city's modern, chic vibe can also be found in the center of Hamburg. Schanzenviertel is the most vibrant district after dark, channelling a touch of Berlin's hedonistic partying into the city's scene. All in all, it's a rare visitor to Hamburg who doesn't find themselves on a fun - and friendly - night out.
