Oktoberfest - Germany
When: 19 September 2009 - 04 October 2009
The Oktoberfest is probably the most famous beer festival in the world. Every year around six million visitors – among them a fair few backpackers! – are drawn to the 42 hectare site in the fields of Theresienwiese, to the southwest of the Bavarian city of Munich.
The name of the game? Beer. And a lot of it. This year’s festival will follow that of previous years: a lot of people sitting around, eating good food and drinking great beer!
Bavaria is known for its beer at the best of times, but during Oktoberfest ,14 massive tents allow drinkers the opportunity to sample every conceivable combination of wheat and hops - it even goes as far as brewing a special Oktoberfest blend that’s unique to the festival.
And it all, naturally, adds up to one great international party, with backpackers from around the world flocking to this unique celebration of inebriation. Many Bavarians, however, also dress up in traditional folk costume, while the first Saturday of the festival sees a parade showcasing each brewery at the festival.
Stalls selling typical fare from sausages to ‘sauerkraut’ and oxtail provide for the necessary lining of stomachs, while traditional Bavarian bands add to the atmosphere and ensure an authentic feel remains. Whichever way you come at it, it's an utterly unforgettable experience!
Unsurprisingly, accommodation for Oktoberfest is highly sought after and hostels in Munich are often booked up well in advance, so anyone hoping to take part in the festivities should ensure that they book early to avoid disappointment, as this is one festival you won't want to miss out on.
