Held in February, Berlin's Film Festival is known by the organizers as 'the Berlinale.' Slowly becoming one of the largest and most exciting film festivals in Europe, it attracts over 16,000 film professionals and thousands of accredited journalists from around the world.
150,000 tickets are sold to the public every year and over 350 films are shown as part of the program. Awards are given to the best films showcased at the event and every production is categorized by its budget and point of origin. The 'Competition' category is for big international movies and the 'Panorama' category is for smaller independent productions.
There are also awards for children's movies, films from remote locations and the best in German cinema. The Berlinale began in 1951 and is regarded in the industry as thoroughly significant for the development of young filmmakers and independent productions.
