From Cologne Bonn Airport – also known as Konrad-Adenauer-Airport – the cheapest way to get to Cologne Hauptbahnof (Central Station) is to catch the S-Bahn (situated between Terminals 1 and 2).Taxis are also available outside the airport but these will be more expensive than the train.
There is a very efficient network of buses and trains for getting around the city itself. Tickets must be purchased in advance and there are heavy fines for being caught without one.
Unlike some cities, buying single tickets instead of a day pass is generally recommended as it only works out cheaper if you plan to use transport more than five times in one day. Alternatively, a Koln Welcome Card allows travelers unlimited travel and includes reduced admission to many of the main sights and excursions.
However, it’s important to bear in mind that public transport isn’t always necessary on your visit. The Alstadt (Old Town) is home to most of the main attractions and has been pedestrianized, making walking or cycling the cheapest - and easiest - way to see the city.
