Getting Around Berlin: Transport Tips and Advice

Transport in Berlin

Of Berlin’s three major airports – Tegel International Airport (TXL), Tempelhof International Airport (THF), and Schonefeld International Airport (SXF) – Schonefeld and Tegel get the majority of air traffic. Both are within easy reach of the city center by various forms of transport.

Berlin itself is a large city separated into three concentric sections (A, B, C). Luckily for visitors, the public transportation system in place is as extensive as the city itself. You can get around using the bus, Strabenbahn (streetcar), S-Bahn (surface rail), and the U-Bahn (subway).

As with most cities, buying single tickets for these systems can be pricey but Berlin offers a few different packages. The best deals often encompass the A and B zones – central Berlin including Tempelhof airport.

A Tageskarte is valid until 3am the next day. The WelcomeCard, which is fairly cheap, is good for 72 hours and includes discounted entry to some sights. Those who plan on a lengthier stay may want to look into the week-long 7-Tage-Karte or the month-long Umweltkarte Standard.

Though the U- and S-Bahn lines close every day from 1-4am, night buses run all night and pick up about every 25 minutes. Additionally, the city has an excellent, and surprisingly affordable, taxi service.
