Cheap airlines now provide direct flights to Nice. Upon landing, bus number 98 departs every 30 minutes for the downtown depot. The six kilometers into town could, in theory, be walked in just over an hour – but it may take a little longer with heavy luggage...
In the city center, buses prove the best option for getting around. Bus number 12 links the beach with the train station and buses number 9 and 10 take you to the port. Cheap daily passes can be purchased from the driver.
A word of warning, though; bus-stop timetables are laid out rather strangely! The time they list is the departure from the first stop, not the one you may be standing at.
Nice also has one tramline that runs through the city center connecting the university with the seafront and the main train and bus terminals. Trams operate the same ticketing system as the buses.
Taxis should probably be avoided as they have a reputation for over-charging foreigners. When forced to take one, however, be sure to insist the meter runs throughout the trip.
If you’re looking for a great workout, walking around Nice is a good bet. Steep hills rise up from just outside the immediate vicinity of the city and make for an energetic trek, but also some great views.
