Eating and drinking in Lyon are a real treat... this is France, after all. But with plenty of great little restaurants that don't cost the earth and lashings of Cotes du Rhone and Beaujolais close to hand at all times, Lyon's a truly great place for a night of indulgence.
'Bouchons' are a very popular form of restaurant in Lyon. These small, intimate affairs offer a good range of decently priced, local dishes, with items such as white cheese and herbs, tripe and an assortment of interesting salads among the usual fare.
Of the many around, perhaps the best (and the most expensive) are based around the Hotel de Ville. Rue du Major Martin and the area around the opera house are all fantastic for a splurge, but will prove beyond the means of most travelers.
Despite some claims that it's a little on the quiet side for a city of its size, Lyon nightlife is everything you'd want it to be. In terms of areas to focus on, Place des Terreaux and the climb up the hill towards the Croix Rousse are the main areas to head to.
From DJs playing house music to a cool young crowd to reggae and Africa beats around rue Pouteau, there are a surprsingly good number of music joints which cater to most tastes on a night out in Lyon.
Down at the quai Albert Augagneur, a number of boats serve as floating nightclubs during the summer months. Here, you can take your pick from many different genres of music and party long into the night in a unusual and vibrant setting.
