Want to know some of the standout things to do in Finland? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Island Fortress of Suomenlinna, Helsinki
Also known as Viapori, the sea fortress (spread across six islands) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally constructed to protect Helsinki from Russian aggressors, it's now a landmark of Finnish culture, with 900 permanent residents on the islands.
As the 'home' of Father Christmas, the tiny province of Lapland attracts scores of visitors eager for the chance to ride on a reindeer-pulled sleigh, be given a gift in Santa's Grotto and witness the spectacular Northern Lights.
3. The Aland Islands
Although geographically part of Finland, this archipelago of 6,500 islands is an autonomous state with its own government, national anthem and football team (don't expect to see them in qualifying games, though – they're not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA). The islands originally bore the Germanic name Ahvaland, meaning Land of the Water.
4. Temppeliaukio Church ('The Rock Church'), Helsinki
With half a million annual visitors, the Lutheran Church is an architectural wonder, carved from a rocky Helsinki outcrop in 1969. Its glazed dome and stunning acoustics make it a popular concert venue.
5. The Lutheran Cathedral, Helsinki
Built between 1830 and 1852 as a tribute to Russian Tsar Nicholas I, its beautiful neoclassical style attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.
