Want to know some of the standout things to do in Helsinki? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. See Suomenlinna
Also known as the Viapori in Finnish, the UNESCO-protected, star-shaped Suomenlinna is a fortress spread out over several islands. A pleasant ferry journey from the city itself, it makes an excellent day trip.
2. Sunbathe (or Sledge) in Sinebrychoffin Park
During the summer, everyone gathers in this beautiful park with a picnic. During the freezing Helsinki winter, the park is full of children hurtling down the hill on their sledges.
3. Check out the Church of Rock!
Temppeliaukio Church is really very special. Hewn out of solid rock in the 1960s, it feels both hip and contemporary, and yet somehow timeless and ancient. It’s often said that, with its shimmering copper roof, it looks a little like a UFO.
4. Kauppatori
Helsinki’s market square is one of the most attractive parts of town. In addition to the fantastic array of artisans’ wares, there’s also some great food available such as smoked and pickled fish and even reindeer sausages.
5. Sweat it out in a Sauna
Saunas are literally everywhere in Finland. In fact, there’s a very good chance that there’ll be one in (or very near) your Helsinki hostel. Careful with the ‘vihta’ (or whisk) though!
