Far up in the frozen arctic north, Finland is one of Europe’s less visited countries. There’s Helsinki, the country’s chic cosmopolitan capital, and Lapland (home to Father Christmas of course!) but after that, relatively little is known about this destination by travelers.
But in addition to Helsinki, Finland has some other fantastic cities: Turku (the former capital) is a small metropolis rich in history; inland, Tampere is a bustling little place, while Savonlinna is home to the impressive Olavinlinna Castle, the northernmost medieval castle.
Natural splendor is always going to be high on the agenda and the country is made up of a number of stunning natural parks. Out to the east stretch the whispering pine forests of Kainuu, while the freezing waters of the Lake Region dominate the landmass.
As well as being the home of Father Christmas, Lapland is also one of Europe’s great wildernesses with mile after mile of arctic tundra. It’s also home to Levi and Saariselka, the country’s excellent winter sports regions.
The Arctic Circle also witnesses the awe-inspiring ‘Midnight Sun’ and the Aurora Borealis, the famous ‘Northern Lights’ that illuminate the north of the country. A couple of nature’s most staggering spectacles, they perfectly sum up Finland’s uniquely mystical appeal.
