Travelers looking for an ultra-sophisticated night out may be a little disappointed by Tallinn nightlife, as, for the most part, it's not so chic . But, really, the city is none the worse for this, and there's a wide range of homely pubs and bars available where the emphasis is on fun and beer.
You can’t go far wrong in Raekoja plats – the main square in the heart of the Old Town – where there are a number of good places for a drink or two. The emphasis here is on international crowds, with a fair few Irish pubs eady for a hard night’s drinking.
But this, too, is where the hordes of stag and hen parties in Tallinn tend to congregate on their nights out. So while the atmosphere’s raucous, it may not be for everyone. And if it does begin to wear, there is another side to Tallinn nightlife.
As a general rule, the further you get away from Raekoja plats, the more the large groups thin out, and a relaxed local scene starts to develop. Move south down Suur-Karja (towards Karjavarava Square) and you quite quickly come upon a handful of cooler drinking dens.
Take the left fork onto Vaike-Karja and it’s pretty much more of the same: a smattering of cool haunts with dark furnishings and soft lighting that spreads out (a little to west) onto Vana-Posti and Harju, and eastwards onto Vana-Viru.
Although Tallinn is not big on trendy nightclubs, these last three streets are where you’ll find the best of what is on offer. With officious bouncers, trendy décor and good music , some places will almost have you thinking you're in New York!
When it comes to live music in Tallinn, there are plenty of bars with a forlorn-looking man tinkling away on a piano. Most places that offer good live music (as with most aspects of the city's nightlife) tend to be in the bars on and around Suur-Karja.
But that’s not really what the nightlife in Tallinn is all about. On a freezing winter’s night, with the beautiful cobbled streets of the Old Town stretching away before you glistening and white, it’s hard to deny that there's something charning in the air.
