Manchester nightlife is a byword for a good night out in the UK, and indeed few places in the world come alive to the same extent. Whether it's the continually evolving music, celebrated gay scene or a more mainstream night of bar-hopping that you're after, Manchester provides large, satisfying helpings of hedonism.
Still drawing attention to its 'Madchester' days of the late 1980s and early 1990s, many of the city's nightspots cater to a devout indie audience, with clubs and pubs projecting the Brit Pod tunes that's made Manchester the musical city of choice for so many over the years.
However, that's not to say the city has stood still: while paying homage to the Stone Roses, Charlatans and Happy Mondays, there are any number of big indie bars and clubs that also play all the latest anthems to keep its cultured audience satisfied.
And nightlife in Manchester certainly doesn't solely revolve around guitar music. Again, the city has history and has been one of the front-runners of dance music in the UK. And these days, when it comes to house and electro music, it's still got a reputation as a clubbing innovator.
The Northern Quarter, which borders Piccadilly Gardens and is close to the central Manchester stations, presents visitors with a number of quirky pubs and restaurants. Drinking in one of the area's watering holes, meanwhile, ensures you're still close enough to the town center to sample the major nightclubs in the Printworks and surrounding streets.
Manchester's also very much a student city: with three universities in close proximity to one another, travelers can find a night that will suit their needs seven days a week. And to keep this large student population happy, most clubs are open until at least 2am, with many staying open later still.
All the major bands and artists head to Manchester on their respective tours. And most nights of the week, gigs will be going ahead at the city's major musical venues: the MEN Arena, the Manchester Academy and the Carling Apollo.
