A Guide to Eating and Drinking in Manchester

Typically English Roast Dinner

Food-lovers may not immediately think of Manchester when running through the world's great eating and drinking cities. But in recent years, Manchester has grown into a truly cosmopolitan city, rivaling London in the scope, vivacity and magnetism of its cultural scene that's reflected than in its culinary goings-on.

Deansgate is undoubtedly the main drag of Manchester and boasts some of the best eating in the city. But right the way across the center, there are any number of places to choose from across the budget spectrum.

Although food fads come and go in Manchester with the same dizzying regularity that posh new restaurants open and close, one institution will always remain: the "Curry Mile".

Famous throughout the UK, this stretch in Rushholme is a garish, eye-popping, overload of the senses. About 40 restaurants are crammed in, along with almost as many takeaways, all offering a myriad of treats for the tastebuds.

A few miles away from Rusholme (in both geography and style), the Manchester suburb of Didsbury has quietly established some of the best restaurants in the city. And this is representative of the city as a whole: great eating and drinking in Manchester isn't confined to anyone area - pockets continue to spring up all over town.
A brash newcomer on the culinary scene, Manchester's eating experience may not quite rival that of London and has a long way to go before it catches up with Paris. But it is growing at a phenomenal rate and already has something to offer almost everybody.
