Things to Do in El Salvador

Want to know some of the standout things to do in El Salvador? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Tazamul Ruins, Chalchuapa

These ancient Mayan tombs date back to 1200 BC and have yielded up over 116 artifacts including jade jewelry and ceramic lizard replicas. One of the country's best preserved archeological finds, there are a series of pyramid-like structures, the biggest of which is 24 meters tall.

2. Joya De Ceren, Sucio River

This small Mayan farming village has been preserved (largely in tact) under layers of volcanic ash. A registered UNESCO heritage site since 1993, the ‘Pompeii of the Americas’ is thought to have been occupied as early as 900 BC.

3. Coatepeque Caldera, Juayua

The huge crater lake of this volcano is the result of around 70,000 years of activity that has included rhytolitic explosions and lava flows. The caldera is thought to have been formed in the earliest part of its active life and is surrounded by a series of intriguing lava flow dome deposits.

4. El Sunzal Beach, La Libertad

This lesser known beach is much less crowded than the more tourist-orientated Costa del Sol. A stunning stretch of sandy ocean seafront, it’s also considered one of the top ten surfing beaches in the world.

5. Old Town, Suchitoto

This historically significant village is a popular El Salvador holiday spot for locals and has plenty of points of cultural interest to boot. Important for indigo and agriculture production during the 14th century, places of interest include the art gallery, Suchitlan Lake and the famous Suchitoto church.
