Things to Do in San Salvador

Want to know some of the standout things to do in San Salvador? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Joya de Ceren – the ‘Pompeii of the Americas’

This UNESCO-protected site was a Mayan farming community buried by a volcanic eruption in the 7th century. Although the inhabitants managed to escape, they left behind an incredible array of items that, along with the perfectly preserved layout of the buildings, provide a remarkable insight into the way they lived.

2. Pick up a Pupusa

Pupusa is a fluffier version of that staple of cheap eating in Central American – the tortilla. What makes the pupusa stand out, though, are the range of fillings (cheese, chicken, beans… anything, really!) with which they’re often filled.

3. Marvel at the Murals

The front of the city’s Catedral Metropolitana is covered in wonderful murals from El Salvador’s principal artist, Fernando Llort. Spectacularly colorful, they make one of the city’s very best photo opportunities.

4. Hunt for a hammock at the Mercado de Artesanias

San Salvador’s Artisan’s Market has a huge range of handmade arts and crafts. The must-have item, however, is undoubtedly the hammock… It just wouldn’t be right to go to a city in the ‘Valley of the Hammocks’ and not buy one, would it?

5. Get out to Los Chorros

Just under an hour away from San Salvador, Los Chorros is the place to head for if you just want to kick back and relax. Set in the most beautifully scenic surroundings, with stunning waterfalls filling up the bathing pools, it’s the perfect antidote to a steamy day in San Salvador.
