In general, dining out in San Salvador is cheap and affordable. Backpackers new to the city would be advised to shop around before choosing a spot, however, as San Salvador also has many chain establishments that look shiny, but don’t always prove very enjoyable.
The local cuisine shares much in common with Mexico, in that the emphasis is on highly spiced dishes that tend to feature tortillas. One of the country's unique delicacies is known as pupusa: these soft tortillas, which are cooked with pork and cheese, are delicious and available everywhere.
For restaurants-goers, the city has a huge range of eateries to suit all palates. Those wishing to go local are spoilt for choice as small, family-run establishments abound on almost every street. Menus are limited down to the basics but prices will be cheap and those who like their pupusas and tortillas will be in heaven.
The Zona Rosa proves one of the better areas in which to dine out, although prices here are admittedly a touch steeper than elsewhere. Similarly, this is the zone to hit if you’re looking for nightlife in San Salvador, with the Boulevard del Hipodromo housing most of the city's bars (many of which are situated in hotels) and San Salvador's few clubs.
