El Salvador del Mundo - El Salvador
When: 01 August 2009 - 07 August 2009
The capital city of El Salvador lies in a valley at the foot of the San Salvador volcano. A fairly lively place at the best of times, it also boasts some of the most frenetic and diverse festivals you’ll find anywhere in the world.
El Salvador del Mundo is perhaps the busiest and most eagerly celebrated of the Saints' days. Every year between 1st and 7th August, the busy streets are transformed with floats, dancers and exuberant color. The many bars and cafés dutifully burst at the seams with crowds as the city becomes one massive party.
The festival is more a carnival than a religious ceremony, but a trip to the capital's religious center is a worthy addition to the day. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Savior marks the middle of the city's street network, its blue and yellow dome peeking over the crowds below.
