Small and discreet, El Salvador tucks itself into the midriff of the Isthmus. Inconspicuously nestled amongst the larger countries of Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, many travelers bypass the country altogether. Those who do make it, however, are in for quite a treat.
With verdant lowlands, plantation-swathed hills, and soaring mountains, El Salvador basks in its own natural splendor. There’s a distinctively undiscovered feel to traveling here, and adventure lurks around just about every corner.
The capital, San Salvador, acts as a jump-off point to the rest of the country. Having used its serviceable infrastructure (clearly lacking in other parts of the country) and walked around the crumbling Old Town, accessing the delights of the surrounding countryside couldn’t be easier.
A little to the west and the Mayan ruins at the San Andres Archeological Site come into view. Having explored the ancient artifacts and edifices, to the west lies Chalchuapa, where the traveler can find the awesome Tazumal – a 75 foot pyramid that rises majestically into the air.
To the south, a glorious coastline stretches away. With golden beaches and crashing waves, El Salvador’s coast increasingly draws surfers from across the globe. La Libertad has plenty of great stretches, while the mangrove swamps of the Bahia de Jiquilisco are intriguing.
North from San Salvador the terrain rises into the craggy mountains, where the fine colonial town of Suchitoto is a great trekking destination. With this abundance of natural splendor quite why more backpackers don’t go to El Salvador will remain a total mystery!
