Things to Do in Egypt
Want to know some of the standout things to do in Egypt? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Great Pyramid of Giza, Cairo
One of the most iconic landmarks of the ancient world, the Great Pyramid is a miracle of engineering ingenuity and human will. Towering above the surrounding desert at over 138 metres high, it is one of the most remarkable manmade structures on the planet.
2. The Sphinx, Cairo
The half-human, half-lion body of the Sphinx has stood next to the Great Pyramid since the third millennium BC. And while legend states that its missing nose was the victim of a Napoleonic cannonball, erosion is the far more likely culprit!
3. The Egyptian Museum, Cairo
As well as housing the famed tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen (discovered by Howard Carter in 1923) the Egyptian Museum has 136,000 other dazzling items on display.
4. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria
A commemoration of the Library of Alexandria (once the largest library in the world, until repeated attacks destroyed its collection) the $220million structure has room for eight million books and its granite walls feature carvings from 120 human scripts.
5. The Red Sea
EM Forster described the Gulf of Suez as "that exquisite corridor of tinted mountains and radiant water". A natural attraction of Biblical proportions, the Red Sea is home to over 1,100 species of fish and offers some truly stunning diving.
