Quito is the country's most dramatically situated city with an average elevation of 2,850 meters. As such, backpackers may need a day or two to acclimatize before they feel up to charging around the city's Old Town, the Museo de Banco Central and the Metropolitan Park (the largest in South America).
2. The Galapagos Islands
This archipelago of volcanic islands is 600 miles west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. The island's are famous for their wide range of wildlife species and the part they played in the formulation of Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
3. Cotopaxi National Park
Just next to the Ecuadorian town of Latacunga, Cotopaxi hosts the highest active volcano on earth. As well as the solid gold photo opportunities that come with a trip to the volcano, the whole park has an abundance of biodiversity. Andean gulls, hummingbirds, condors and blue-billed pointed ducks are just some of the array of birds you’re likely to see on a trip here.
This town nestles in the center of the Andes mountain range and serves as a great jump-off point for hiking trips into the highlands. Other activities backpackers can enjoy in Banos include horse riding, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and even a dip in a hot spring.
5. Teleferico, Quito
Teleferico – or cable car service – will whisk you from Quito city center to Cruz Loma station, which is part of the Pichincha mountain complex that stands at 4,000 meters. A number of restaurants, shops and, of course, a stunning view of the city greet travelers at the top.
