The mythical birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite and the Cypriot capital during Greco-Roman times, Paphos offers a wealth of attractions for Classical enthusiasts. So extensive is its list of landmarks (including the earthquake-hit Castle of Paphos, the beautiful mosaics in the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus and Aion, the Tombs of the Kings, scores of ancient catacombs and the striking rock of Aphrodite) that the entire town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Discovered in 1934, this well-preserved Neolithic settlement was occupied from the 7th to the 4th century BC and provides a window on the spread of civilization from Asia to the Mediterranean world.
3. Kolossi Castle
A military stronghold dating from the 13th century, this imposing castle was built a few kilometers away from Limassol by the Hospitallers (or the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem). Fans of The Da Vinci Code might also be interested to learn that the castle was controlled by the shadowy Knights Templar in the 14th century.
4. Troodos Mountains
Home to nine Byzantine churches and one monastery – all of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites – the mountain range is Cyprus' backbone, providing a green haven away from the country's often busy beaches. A popular skiing destination between January and March, Mount Olympus offers seven different ski routesat 1,952 meters.
5. Old City, Nicosia
The highpoint of any trip to the Cypriot capital, the walled city was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, with its renovated streets carefully restored to provide a window onto the Cyprus of old.
