Things to Do in Cuba

Founded in the 16th century as a stop-off point for Spanish galleons laden with gold, Old Havana is now a treasure of wonders itself. Strolling around its narrow streets and enigmatic ruins reveals a city that, with time having stood still, is really like no other.

This fortress was built in 1637 by an Italian military engineer to guard against invading pirates. It's situated about six miles from Santiago de Cuba's city center, and travelers can enjoy great views over the bay from the castle walls.

Some 90 singers and dancers greet you at the garish Cuban institution that is Club Tropicana. Dating back to 1939, for those that can afford it, the cabaret night puts on a flamboyant and lavishly kitsch show.

Originally hailing from 1876, the Colon Cemetery has over 500 major mausoleums and vaults. Set on a 140-acre site, the cemetery holds over 800,000 graves, including two major monuments to the national obsession: baseball.

Santa Clara's biggest attraction resonates with a sense of history. The memorial statue can be found in Plaza de la Revolution and has a bronze cast of Che Guevara, his arm in a sling, looking resplendent atop a stone plinth.
