Jose Marti International Airport is about ten miles from Havana city center and there are (fairly) regular shuttle buses to ferry people back and forth.
Once inside the city, the narrow streets of Old Havana are best explored on foot from a practical, as well as a scenic, point of view. Getting to and from Vedado and Miramar, however, demands a bit more planning…
‘Camellos’ or ‘guaguas’ (large buses pulled by trucks) are the cheapest way of getting around the city. They are, however, slow and horrendously overcrowded and most people would prefer to take one of the city’s many different types of taxi.
In theory, the state doesn’t permit drivers of anything other than a ‘tourist taxi’ to take visitors. The reality is rather different, and the magnificent ‘colectivos’ (shared vintage cars) and colorful ‘coco taxis’ will happily pick you up and ferry you around in style.
