A Guide to Eating and Drinking in Zagreb

A Mountainous Salad in Zagreb

There's plenty for the restaurant-goer to enjoy in Zagreb, as the eating and drinking is uniformly excellent. After dinner, too, the Zagreb nightlife scene is increasingly gathering pace, and offers a range of options to satisfy the majority of visitors.

Carnivores will love the emphasis on meaty options in the local eateries, while superb fresh fish from the Dalmatian coast can be enjoyed throughout the city. Those looking to try a local dish should have a go at the excellent cevapcici (garlic sausages), served with onions, capsicum paste and bread.

Given Croatia's proximity to Italy, Italian cuisine is also pretty much omnipresent throughout. As such, it's really pretty hard to go wrong with any (invariably very reasonable) pizza establishment in the city.

The Zagreb nightlife scene has started to come into its own rather more in recent years. A good place to start an evening off is in the attractive main Town Square: here, you can relax and watch the world go by over an early evening coffee.

There are numerous bars to try, although the Tkalciceva and Trg petra Preradovica districts will keep most travelers happy. In the summer months, meanwhile, much of the actions shifts to the banks of Lake Jarun where a number of cool bars and clubs keep revelers going until long into the night.
