Want to know some of the standout things to do in Split? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Be Dazzled by Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace is one of the most important – and beautiful – Roman remains to be found anywhere outside Rome. Built in the 4th century AD, what really makes it stand out is the way it now acts as the heart of the city. Rather than a silent, solemn museum piece, its remarkably well-preserved Peristyle is instead full of life.
2. Relax on the Riva…
…Or to give it its other (slightly less catchy) name, the ‘Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda’. Split’s central promenade is the place to grab a coffee (or a cold beer) on a sunny evening, and just watch the world go by.
3. The Split Summer Festival
Split’s Summer Festival competes with neighboring Dubrovnik’s for the Croatian cultural crown. Running throughout July and August, acts include a wide range of theater, opera and classical music performances as well traditional Croatian folk culture.
4. Island Hopping
The Dalmatian Coast is studded with beautiful islands. One of the most attractive, Brac Island, is home to the fantastic beach of Zlatni Rat, and some of the best windsurfing in Europe.
5. Try to Catch ‘the Bandit’
Split’s football team, Hajduk – or ‘the Bandit’ – play in the atmospheric Poljud Stadium (to the north of the Old Town). Although not the biggest stadium in Europe, Hajduk are one of the most fanatically followed football teams in the world, and getting to a match is a definite highlight of a stay in the city.
