Juan Santamaria Airport is approximately ten miles outside San Jose and sees a number of international flights every day, mostly from the Americas. Buses are available from outside the airport but it's far easier to grab a 'Taxi Aeropuerto' for the 20-minute journey to the center.
Long distance buses from Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama arrive and depart from the main bus station. The country as a whole is well served by a bus network for travelers hoping to explore further afield than San Jose.
In the city center, getting around is very cheap and fairly easy by bus, although there are also plenty of reasonable taxis which offer a more speedy alternative to public transport.
The light rail service is probably the best way to travel in San Jose. Tickets are inexpensive and valid for up to two hours, with stops including downtown museums and the Convention Center. You can also hop on the old trolleys (which make a loop downtown in summer), tickets for which can be purchased in any light rail station.
