Barranquilla Carnival - Colombia
When: 01 February 2010 - 28 February 2010
Taking place every February, Barranquilla Carnival is the largest street parade in Colombia and perhaps the most authentic in South America. There’s none of the (occasional) commercialism of the Rio Carnival here, but there is the genuine fun and vibrant atmosphere.
Amongst the parades and parties, there’s a strong Spanish and African vibe to things that mix fantastically with the ingrained indigenous music and dance. Many of the performances have been planned for months and a real sense of pride goes into the showcasing of national traditions.
The town of Barranquilla grinds to a total standstill as one float after another passes through its streets. Travelers looking for a heady and vibrant atmosphere this carnival season could do an awful lot worse!
