1. The Great Wall of China
The only manmade landmark that can be seen from space, the Great Wall was constructed to protect the Chinese Dynasties from outside attack during the 14th and 15th centuries. Badaling is probably the best preserved stretch, and also houses the Great Wall Museum.
2. The Forbidden City, Beijing
The 980 buildings of the Forbidden City were the home of various Emperors throughout its 500 year history. It's now partly given over to the Palace Museum, where it's thought that over one million items are in regular rotation.
3. Tiananmen Square, Beijing
This huge square at the heart of Beijing has been the site of many historically important events over the years. Today it contains a Monument to the People’s Heroes, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, where the embalmed body of the dictator is displayed.
4. The Great Buddha, Leshan
Situated just outside Leshan, the construction of this stone Buddha is thought to have commenced in 713 AD. Standing 71 meters tall, it's the largest of its kind to be found anywhere in the world.
5. Terracotta Army, Xian
8,099 life-size army figures made from terracotta are stored in a huge warehouse hanger just outside Xi’an. Discovered in 1974, they now display varying degrees of damage and renovation, but remain a truly daunting spectacle.
