Lanterns at New Year
Chinese New Year - China
When: 14 February 2010
Chinese New Year is a fantastic blend of color, excitement and tradition that takes place all over the world. Celebrations begin on the first day of the first lunar month of the year and last for 15 days before ending in extravagant style with the famed ‘Lantern Festival’.
About a month before the turn of the year, preparations get underway with households stocking up on food, presents and decorations. Streets are cleaned from top to bottom to try and sweep away any bad luck, whilst houses are vigorously spring-cleaned.
As the New Year approaches, revelers literally paint the town red with fresh coats of paint applied to window panes and doors. Any black and white clothes are put safely away as they represent times of mourning.
The 15 days themselves follow a strictly adhered to patter of visiting. For example, on the first day, families visit the eldest member in their clan and, on the following day, married daughters visit their parents.
Lantern shows mark the end of the festivities and provide a beautiful and peaceful send off to the celebrations, after which there’s only 11 months to prepare for the next Chinese New Year!
